by Chrysti Huntsman An Angel in our Community
by Chyrsti Huntsman
She has been called an “angel in the community” and anyone who knows Talana Fawson will agree. This Fall Talana was given the XO award, an award given for everyday heroes who serve with “caring and kindness”. Out of over 40 nominations, the winners were picked by boys scouts, firefighters and previous XO award winners. This award program began 2005, with the first award in 2006. Sean Reyes, the nominator, said of Talana that she “helps people on a daily basis without any thought of personal gain”.
Talana has been a counselor at Farr West Elementary school for 12 years, and spends about half her time in the classroom teaching skills that help the children deal with life better. “I love it” she says. She loves spending time with the teachers, but even more she loves spending time with the kids. “They are so honest, it’s refreshing.” She can still remember exactly what made her want to be a counselor. She was working as a teacher at the time and a boy with a hard family life was struggling. She went back to school right away to get the knowledge and training so that she could help other children who were struggling.
She has done many things to distinguish herself as a counselor. For example when she got to Farr West Elementary she started a mediation program for kids to help each other work out their problems. Another program that she uses is a state-wide program. This program deals primarily with positive reinforcement. “Because I know punishment does not work; Encouragement does,” she says.
“I think that takes a special person to constantly stay positive, upbeat, optimistic and I think it’s her overwhelming love and hope for these children.” Reyes declared. Talana is an amazing woman in our community. She is another of our everyday heroes that may not often be recognized. Yet they are making remarkable differences in our lives. We all know someone that is an unappreciated champion in one way or another. Talana is just an example. “ I don’t want a lot of attention - but just to be told thank you means something.” Saying thank you can go a long way. Let us all make a goal to find and thank a hero today!
