Letters to the Editor -Utah is Right to Assert Itself

Utah is Right to Assert Itself

What a breath of fresh air it is to hear Rep. Carl Wimmer and some other Utah legislators speaking up for States' Rights! I say good for them! Ever the since the wrong-headed 17th Amendment was passed, we have seen steady erosion of the power of the individual States... and it has been a serious problem.

Once the federal government had the right to tax individuals (also from a bad revision of the Constitution, the 16th Amendment), they have been taking more of what we earn... and then giving back to the States only that portion they feel we deserve. Thus, they wield a huge sword with which they can threaten us if we don't accept their policies. "If you won't accept our federal edicts, we'll cut off your highway, school, welfare funding...!" And so the States grovel before them willing to comply with every dictate in order to get their "own money" back. It's absurd and should have been checked decades ago.

Rep. Wimmer and the others are finally taking a stand to say we're not going to play that game any longer. This is based on proper principle and rule of correct law. We should be heralding their bravery and patriotism. And every State of the Union should be following our example. If they all would, we could finally harness-the-beast and get back to constitutional governance as it should be.

The States remain to this day sovereign over the federal government and yet how many Americans even know that?! It IS time that we take a stand and say "enough is enough!" We can be proud of our State legislators and we need to support them in the action they are willing to take... even if it has some painful temporary consequences.
