Managing Editor GOP Winners Emphasize Return to Constitution
by Managing Editor
The winning Republican Contenders at the Utah 2010 Republican Convention almost universally promoted a return to the principles of the U.S. Constitution. The topic was certainly brought up more than just in passing. Only one race continues on to the statewide Republican primary on June 22, 2010. That is the U.S. Senate race between Tim Bridgewater and Mike Lee. Although Tim Bridgewater had the highest vote count at the end of the third round of voting, it wasn’t enough to preclude a primary election.
In the first round of voting, Mike Lee had the highest vote from the delegates at 28.75%, followed by Tim Bridgewater at 26.84%, Bob Bennett at 25.91%, Cherilyn Eagar at 15.84%, and the remaining four candidates, Merrill Cook, Leonard Fabiano, Jeremy Friedbaum, and David Chiu each had less than 1.5% each. Senator Bennett was eliminated in the second round with only approximately 28% of the vote. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that of the three second-round candidates, Senator Bennett spoke the least about the Constitution. In fact, virtually all of the other statewide candidates spoke more about the Constitution.Governor Herbert and Congressman Bishop advanced handily over their competitors. Governor Herbert had 70% of the vote compared to 25% for Daniel Van Oaks.. Both of them spoke about our Constitution. Congressman Bishop moves on to face a Democrat and a Constitutionalist. Second congressional candidate, Morgan Philpot, moves on to the November election to face the winner of the Democratic primary between Congressman Matheson and Claudia Wright. Morgan Philpot narrowly (by 0.13%) avoided a primary with Neil Walter. Both Philpot and Morgan spoke vigorously for freedom under the Constitution.
Now voters in the Sentinel News area will get to choose between Tim Bridgewater, who calls himself, “a Constitutionalist who is also a Capitalist”, and Mike Lee, who has plans to restore the Constitution.
