Harrisville Meetings 5/25/2010
Sentinel News Staff

The Harrisville City Council did a very good job of following the agenda as posted on the Utah Cities Public Meetings site. (http://www.utah.gov/pmn/index.html) I’m also very impressed with the quality web site. http://cityofharrisville.com/. One thing of particular interest to me was the excitement I sensed in the council for the upcoming Heritage Days activities. Check out the web site for more information. Of note also was the new sign planned for the city offices.

As a representative of the Sentinel News, I have the privilege of sitting in on various council meetings. The one thing that is common in all these meetings is the absence of participation (and/or observation) of the community. There were 60 seats set up for the public. Including me, there were 7 in attendance. I realize that we are all involved to some degree in evening activities which vary in importance; but, here is something to consider: These community meetings only last 60 to 90 minutes (in most cases). The subjects being discussed may or may not have importance to you and your family; but my experience has been that I feel better about being a member of my community because of observing the processes involved at the City Council level. I find that in most cases these are people who truly want to give their best personal attention to the issues that are presented for their deliberation and action; and they welcome informed contributions from the community.

Consider taking this challenge: attend at least two city council meetings in your community in the next month and see if it makes a difference in the way you feel about your leaders and yourself.
