Wildcats, Aggies face off to help save lives at annual USU vs. WSU Blood Battle

Donors invited to bleed purple or blue for their favorite university, Aug. 27-31

OGDEN and LOGAN, Utah (Aug. 15, 2018) — Utah State University and Weber State University are challenging each other in a friendly competition to see which school can collect the most lifesaving blood donations. Fans of the USU Aggies and WSU Wildcats are invited to show their school spirit at the USU vs. WSU Blood Battle with the American Red Cross.

This blood drive comes as the Red Cross faces a severe blood shortage and is issuing an emergency call for blood donors to give so patients can continue to receive the lifesaving treatment they need. Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in. More donations are immediately needed to help replenish the blood supply.

During the USU vs. WSU Blood Battle, blood donors can give a pint, support their school and help save lives – all in about an hour. The blood drive will be held Monday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Aug. 31.

In thanks, all those who come to donate blood July 30 through Aug. 30, 2018, will receive a $5 Amazon.com Gift Card via email. (Restrictions apply; see amazon.com/gc-legal. More information and details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/Together.)

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Trauma patients, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood. The Red Cross encourages people who are in good health to donate so that hospital patients have the blood needed to make a full recovery. Red blood cells have a shelf life of only 42 days, so they must be replenished constantly – there is no substitute.

How to donate blood

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at redcrossblood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.
