There are 38 total chapters in the handbook and nine of them have been totally rewritten.

This new general handbook titled: General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This newly revised handbook will now encompass all the information from Handbook 1 (for stake presidents and bishops) and Handbook 2 (for all other leaders).  The new handbook is in digital version only and is available to anyone.  According to the Church’s website: www.newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org we learn that the new book will be, “updated regularly to give it requisite flexibility to help thousands of leaders around the world adapt to Church’s various programs, policies, and procedures to their circumstances with loving, pastoral care.”

Leaders of the Church wanted to compile a new consolidated version rather than go back and reformat/update old material.

The First Presidency and Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles felt that this newly, updated version of the Handbook needed to be out sooner rather than later.

Because the new Handbook is in a digital format, it can be easily updated according to revelation as it is received.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints believes in continued revelation through prophets, apostles and members alike.

Also, Sis. Reyna I. Aburto of the Relief Society General Presidency, who gave part in helping to create this new Handbook, said, “It is so important for members to understand—both men and women—that God is giving us His power so we can go and do the things that He has asked us to do.” www.newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org

The new Handbook is being translated into 51 languages as quickly as it can. There will be opportunities to view videos in the digital handbook version as well as to read it.  This will give everyone the chance to view it how it best suits them when learning.

Here is a summary of the nine chapters which were rewritten:

  1. God’s Plan and Your Role in the Work of Salvation and Exaltation

This chapter helps Latter-Day Saints understand God’s plan of happiness, the work of salvation and exhalation and the purpose of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

  1. Supporting Individuals and Families n the Work of Salvation and Exaltation

The role of the family in God’s plan is taught here.  We learn of the home, how the family is the central role in the home and the work of salvation and exaltation.  Also, the relationship between the home and the Church.

  1. Priesthood Principles

The purpose of the priesthood, what it is, where it came from and how it works to bless each other’s lives is talked about in this chapter. “All Church members who keep their covenants—women, men and children—are blessed with God’s priesthood power in their homes to strengthen themselves and their families.”

  1. Leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ

Building unity, counseling together, preparing spiritually and how to be more Christlike as we serve is talked about in this chapter of the Handbook.

  1. Seminaries and Institutes of Religion

This particular chapter discusses the Church’s Seminary        program (which is the religious education for teenagers) and Institute Program (religious education for Latter-Day Saints ages 18-30).

18. Priesthood Ordinances and Blessings

There are many priesthood rites within the Church and this chapter helps us understand and outline these rites.

32. Repentance and Church Membership Councils

This chapter has undergone significant changes and revisions.  Formerly called, “Church Discipline”, this chapter focuses on guiding leaders how to carefully take action to help people repent of a serious sin. Additionally, this chapter helps to directly focus on helping protect those who pose a physical or spiritual threat.  “Disciplinary Councils” are now called “Church membership councils.”

36. Creating, Changing and Naming New Units

This chapter focuses on the guidelines of the creation of new stakes, wards and branches

37. Specialized Stakes, Wards, and Branches

This is the chapter where leaders learn the details of creating stakes, wards and branches especially for specific groups. For example, those who live in a care facility, students, speak a specific language or other circumstance.

38.6 Church Policies and Guidelines

The Church’s polices are outlined here
