The SHIFT Summit

Oct. 7 - Oct. 9, 2015

Center for the Arts, Jackson, Wyoming

Set at the forefront of The 2015 SHIFT Festival is the SHIFT Summit, a two-and-a-half day, in-depth exploration of the opportunities and challenges before the outdoor recreation/conservation partnership, with an emphasis on GEMS (Gateways to Environments of Major Significance) as laboratories for communities striving to live in balance with nature.

The 2015 SHIFT Summit is developed around participation from six groups:

·    The Outdoor Industry

·    Outdoor Recreation User Groups

·    Conservation Advocates

·    Public Land Managers

·    Outdoor Media

·    Community Leadership in GEMS (Gateways to Environments of Major Significance)

Participants will explore three major topics throughout the festival each with a core set of discussion questions; Responsible recreation, access, and conservation leadership.

The National Geographic Society’s Chief Content Officer, Chris Johns oversees the expression of National Geographic’s editorial content across its media platforms. Johns served as editor in chief of National Geographic magazine from January 2005 to April 2014, the ninth editor of the magazine since its founding in 1888. His editorial efforts to focus on excellence in photojournalism and reporting were recognized with 21 National Magazine Awards from the American Society of Magazine Editors. This keynote presentation will feature Johns’ insight on the national park system, with a focus on Yellowstone National Park, the first national park in the world and the sole subject of the May 2016 issue of National Geographic.

The People's Banquet, featuring Mark Bittman

Friday, October 9, Center for the Arts 5:00 pm

Featuring a keynote address by Mark Bittman, the food journalist, author, columnist for The New York Times and author of 14 books, including bestselling How to Cook Everything and Vegan Before 6 P.M., Bittman will deliver core messages related to food and how it has the power to make or break not only our personal health, but that of the planet.

SHIFT’s popular celebration of sustainable food systems, The People’s Banquet pairs local chefs with local producers to create a sustainable, delicious, all-you-can-eat evening at the award-winning, Center for the Arts. As always, the evening pairs local chefs with local farmers, cheese makers, bakers and brewers to create delectable small plates sourced completely from local ingredients.

The 2015 People’s Banquet will celebrate Vertical Harvest, a Wyoming-based agri-business that will enhance the local economy by operating year round to sell fresh, locally grown produce to the community through multiple venues at a competitive, consistent price.
