GreenWood School Updates

Friday, June 26, 2015 - 8:45am

9 more weeks until school begins!!  J  Our teachers have been busy this week- learning and growing to be great teachers for your students.  These teachers are amazing!  Learning from the Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds conference put on by the USOE, teachers learned ideas for meeting our charter goal of movement in the classroom.  Students will be given opportunities to move around, walk and keep moving.  Students are welcome to bring alternative seating from home to use at GreenWood to keep their learning more active.

We are in Day 1 of our 3-day EL 101 at sister school, Venture Academy, learning the fundamentals of implementing Expeditionary Learning at GreenWood.  Our teachers are being immersed in classroom management, school culture, instructional practices and EL curriculum strategies.  Your children will learn in a richly supportive EL environment at GreenWood.  Learn more at elschools.org

OGDEN RAPTORS FAMILY BASEBALL NIGHT:  Come share an evening with other GreenWood families at a Raptors Baseball Game on Tuesday, July 21st at 7pm.  We have reserved tickets for our families and our asking for you to RSVP to jnay@greenwoodcharter.org the number of tickets you would like to reserve.  Tickets are $3 and can be bought at the gate- we just need to have a headcount by Monday, July 20th.  9 of our students will get to be a “baseball buddy” at the beginning of the game, and 1 lucky GreenWood student will get to throw the opening pitch.  If your student is interested, respond to this email with their response to the question: “Why I am excited to be a student at GreenWood Charter School.”  We will notify our favorite responses to come and represent GreenWood, with our favorite response getting to throw out that first pitch!  Looking forward to reading your student’s responses!

ART AT GREENWOOD:  Wednesday, we received word that we were awarded a Beverly Sorenson Taylor Art Grant for our school!!!!  Yipppeeeeee!!!  This $18,000 grant supports our arts program by affording us a FULL-TIME ART SPECIALIST!!!  We couldn’t be more excited!  Now GreenWood students will be receiving integrated arts lessons from a certified and highly qualified art teacher, Maggie Nylander.  Please help us spread the word of the amazing arts program GreenWood will have for our students.  If you have a passion for art, have supplies to donate, or would like to be involved in supporting our arts program, please email Maggie at mnylander@greenwoodcharter.org

MAKE-UP KINDER SCREENING:  July 20th from 5-7pm.  If your Kinder missed their screener last week, or if they have recently received an acceptance letter, bring your Kinder for their screening appointment on Monday, July 20th anytime between 5 and 7pm.  Please leave siblings at home.

June 25, July 29 and Aug 10- Family Splash Pad Gatherings at the Harrisville Bowery and Splash Pad. @6pm These are for the kids to come have some fun with their new GreenWood friends, and for parents to chat with staff about our school.  We will dedicate a night to each Grove:

o   June 25, Upper Grove (5-6th graders)

o   July 29, Middle Grove (3-4th graders)

o   Aug 10, Early Grove (1-2nd graders)

·        Parent Information Night on July 15 at the Harrisville Cabin @7pm.  As our Family Nights have grown so large, the Cabin has asked that we no longer provide our kids activities during these presentations.  We still feel these informational nights are important for our parents to hear.  Come with your neighbors and listen to our presentation, ask questions about programs and enrollment and hear from our School Director.

Helping Hands Needed

Forest Crew Experts Needed:  Mrs. Begley, our PE Teacher is looking for parents with hobbies, skills, fitness pursuits, interests, and/or careers that they would be willing to share at our weekly Wednesday Forest Crew Community Circle.  Our Forest Crew is a cultural celebration of our kids and their achievements and a share of families as we invite the whole community to circle ‘round our student seedlings in support of their education and social growth. If you would like to help, email lbegley@greenwoodcharter.org

Family Crew Organization (FCO):   Calling all leaders!  It is time to get our families ready for school.  Are you wanting to be more involved in school?  Are you a great people organizer, but have families to support at home?  We have leadership roles for those who have time at home or work and those who can be at the school.  We are looking for parent leaders who can lead our Family Crews in support of our school:

·        Chair

·        Vice Chair

Summer Booths:

·        This Saturday, June 27 - Harrisville Heritage Days.  Setup 8 a.m. Event runs 10 a.m.-10 p.m., although I think staffing through 10 p.m. is far too much. We could wrap up by 3 or 4 and hit enough families for boosting the school's presence.  We can use the help if you have an hour to share, email ssnyder@greenwoodcharter.org

·        Harrisville Farmer's Market -- Thursday evenings July 16- Aug. 13. Set up any time between 4:30-5:30 (5:00 would be soon enough). Market runs 5:30-8:30 p.m.

·        Ogden Farmer's Market-- Saturday mornings, July 18-Aug. 15. Set up is at 7:45 a.m. Market ends at noon.

GreenWood will provide your table and shade tent for any events that don't provide it (like the farmer's markets). Depending on the date of the event you choose, we will either help you set up or get the table stuff to you the day before. If you can help us, send Susan an email at ssnyder@greenwoodcharter.org

Phone Calls:  Can you help us keep connected with our GreenWood families?  We don’t see you everyday, and would like to have some groups established to keep connected and communicate announcements.  If you are friendly and love to reach out to others, email me to help us.

Yearbook:  Photo savvy?  Always the one remembering to take the picture of the event?  We need you!  …and your pictures!  We would like to start our Yearbook support now to help document our planning year, our fun family events, even the construction of the building.  If you think you could help, email me at jkidd@greenwoodcharter.org

·        We want local farmers who can help us provide their produce for our kitchen and education for our kids:  please email aroberts@greenwoodcharter.org

·        We need local artisans who can bring their craft to our school:  please email mnylander@greenwoodcharter.org

·        We need volunteers who can help us build our student reading and math tutoring programs.

·        Parents, help us share GreenWood posts on Facebook- we try to share meaningful content to support our families implementing the HEALTH values.

·        Candice would love your help organizing a book drive at your place of work or in your neighborhoods to bring in the last 1000 books for our library.  Email cmbrown82@msn.com

·        Keep asking around for donations of office and school furniture- email showerton@greenwoodcharter.org if you have items to share or connections to someone who can help us.
